'Missing Milly Dowler's voicemail was hacked by News of the World' Guardian Clicky

Seriously, Murdoch's machine has been bad in the past but this alleged hacking is disgusting:

Quote:
In the last four weeks the Met officers have approached Surrey police and taken formal statements from some of those involved in the original inquiry, who were concerned about how News of the World journalists intercepted – and deleted – the voicemail messages of Milly Dowler.

The messages were deleted by journalists in the first few days after Milly's disappearance in order to free up space for more messages. As a result friends and relatives of Milly concluded wrongly that she might still be alive. Police feared evidence may have been destroyed.

The Guardian investigation has shown that, within a very short time of Milly vanishing, News of the World journalists reacted by engaging in what was then standard practice in their newsroom: they hired private investigators to get them a story.

Perversion of justice charges ahoy.

I wonder how long it will be before this story goes international and his other rags get caught up in this.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Not long I imagine, the editor at the time was Rebekah Brooks who is now News International's Chief Executive.

Frikkin disgusting. I, too, hope heads roll. "Standard practice" is not something they should be able to hide behind.

Such interference with Police murder investigations should result in prison terms usually.

I don't think too many people would complain if they were banned from holding similar positions for a certain time. If it is standard practice in the media then large financial examples should be set for the corporations as well as individuals.

This was the worst aspect. They should be all locked up and News International fined tens of millions for creating a culture of criminality. Though we all know that will not happen with Murdoch having the Tories in his pocket.

They sold papers, kept the business afloat, so they probably are really.

The downside for them, and indeed the rest of the media, is that now there has to be some form of independent regulator, with the balls to go after those who step out of line hard*, put in place. The industry clearly can’t regulate itself.

*However, the Government prefers a softly-softly approach when it comes to regulation, so don’t hold your breath.

Actually, I think you'll find when Rupert Murdoch is involved they rather prefer 'let him do whatever the hell he likes'.

So, this Private Investigator deleted messages in order to allow her voicemail to receive more messages? Or, did he do it to deny juicy tidbits of info to others with media affiliations? which would suggest the practise is much more widespread than just the NOTW.

Either way, it is disgusting, morally bankrupt behaviour.

Phone-hacking police meet murdered Soham girls' parents

Quote:
The parents of murdered Soham girls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman have been visited by police investigating phone-hacking by journalists.

Story is just emerging so not much more yet from the BBC here.

Now what? Words fail me.

There really needs to be a ban on self regulation. None have shown themselves to be brilliant. That should extend to all professional bodies who seem more intent of covering up the matter even if they have to pay out.

I propose a national 'Kick a journalist in the head day' to help keep them in line. We may as well set aside a few extra days for MPs as well, say every other Tuesday.
