Somewhat. More a property bubble that burst, in the main. The point is, the republic's economy is in a state only marginally better that Greece's.

This is the cover of one of the RoI's newspapers shortly after things went off down the creek without a paddle...

It would have been bad with the excessive over investment and speculation in property. What really screwed things up was guaranteeing the banks. They were so insolvent that they immediately dragged the country down. Add in three years of austerity and you have a country with living standards decimated and mass emigration and still facing default. What surprises me is why they are not rioting like the Greeks?
