I'll be curious to see what Amazon come up with considering the competition these days :)

Interesting, but I don't see a 7" tablet selling in any great numbers for an asking price of £300 or more; the cheaper one looks like it could appeal as a 'reader tablet' - 4:3 screens work much better in portrait than 16:9 - as long as it isn't hobbled too much to get it to price.

Looking forward to see what Amazon comes up with as well, though a bit concerned that, like the B&N Nook Color (sic), they may concentrate on the US market at first; their App Store is US-only and it took them two years to get an 'international' Kindle out of the door...

The X10 AirPad looks like an interesting little thing - cheap too; if they ever ship to the UK I'll have one.

Cheers, Pete

The Nook is definitely impressive, though I keep finding that individual aspects of all the tablets/readers are what I really want :(

And I'm thinking for comics any potential choice might have to be 10"...

Yes - and a 7" for when you don't want to faff about with anything as big as that ;)

After you use an iPad for a while you appreciate the extra screen size. 7" will be another niche, which may not have enough interested users to make money. Though if it had a full HD resolution screen that could make up for some of the other short comings.

Whilst I agree about the iPad, having been stuck on holiday recently without any internet access other than a clunky Kindle (thanks a bunch Orange...) I came to the conclusion that a smaller tablet of around ~7" would work really nicely, as long as it had pinch-to-zoom; whether we'll ever see one that's decently put together and selling for a reasonable price is another thing, of course; to my mind a ~7" tablet that's half the price of an entry-level iPad needs to be around half the price, at most - or maybe I'm just cheap ;)

The thing is that unless it is an Apple tablet it simply has to be much cheaper to get any chance of traction in the market place. So no you are not cheap. TBH if you are spending a lot of money on a device you want the manufacturer to be around to support it. At least with the App store the chances are that there will be something that you want available as an app and that Apple will be around in a few years with new versions. HP have already left the market so what prospects for the rest?

htc are brining 2 new Windows 7 (Mango) phones to the congress and Samsung are rumoured to be showing off the next generation of the Galaxy S, running Android 4, 1.5Ghz processor, 1280x480 display - Acer and a couple of others are also rumoured to have 1.5Ghz dual core processors and "Cinemascope" phones for the show.

There should also be a plethora of new Android tablets, many running Ice Cream Sandwich.

Now release dates yet.

(Read it in the current issue of c't yesterday evening, haven't found an on-line source in English.)

I had a play with a bunch of tablets at MediaMarkt on Saturday. An Archos Windows 7 and Android, the Acer Iconia A500 and the Packard Bell Liberty (almost identical to the A500, just a bit thicker, not surprising as they both come from the same company) an iPad and an iPad 2. To be honest, the Acer/PB pads with Android 3 were excellent and I'd much rather have one of them, compared to the iPad. The cheap Archos wasn't very nice (and Android 2.2, so not a Tablet OS).

As the Galaxy Tab is still banned here, I didn't get a chance to play with it, but going by the Iconia, the Galaxy Tab should be very good.
