I don't think non-techies would be that bothered, but I wouldn't touch a branched version. I want the latest version, with all the security patches. I won't be getting that, if it is forked. It is one of the reasons I bought an unlocked Sensation, not one on contract, I had that problem with my WP7 Mozart, I had to wait not only for Microsoft and htc to launch updates, but also for my provider to release an update. If I had to wait for the manufacturer to decide whether they want incorporate the latest changes to Android, then wait for them to integrate them into their fork, the next security patch will already have been released for Android, before the manufacturer has integrated the previous patch... And I thought the current Android situation was bad! |

It does have the possibility of getting better through. If someone like HTC really went for it, they might even patch holes before Google does. The only downside I see for consumers and devs is an even more fragmented system as each hardware manufacturer moved their fork in slightly different directions. |

Apps are the key. A lot of people will be put off going for a non-Andriod derivative if they can't use their favourite apps. For example. I use 3G Watchdog and I'd need to see an equivalent before moving OS as it could cost me a fortune if I go over my data allowance. |
