Let's do the maths.

DirecTV $30 a film, cinema price (lets say) $5 per film per person.
So you'd need at least six people watching to justify the cost.
Six people in a cramped living room watching on a small TV..... That would be pants.

No wonder it didn't work.

The studios were clearly deluded. The price was always going to kill the service. It is prices like that, that encourage piracy. Only an idiot would think that $30 a film would be a success.
