http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/exclusive-new-80mph-motorway-limit-20mph-in-towns-2362980.html

Quote:
The speed limit on Britain’s motorways is set to rise to 80mph but with a big expansion in the number of 20mph zones in cities and towns, The Independent has learnt.

The Government's intention to bring in the new speed limit will be announced at the Conservative Conference next week by the Transport Secretary, Philip Hammond, as part of a deal negotiated with the Liberal Democrats.

...Mr Hammond argues that the new 80mph limit will shorten journey times and help boost the economy. But the move will be criticised by environmentalists who point out that cars use about 20 per cent more fuel at the higher speed. Road safety campaigners condemn the proposals, saying it will lead to an increase in deaths and serious injuries.

80mph?

I'll stick to 65mph, thanks.

TBH almost everyone I see on the motorway is driving at either 80mph or well above it anyway so I really don't see that this will have an effect.

Yes, but the point is that the majority of motorists who are doing so will no longer be criminals.
Policing by consent.

Plus the fact that we know people exceed the mandatory limit by 15-20mph, and will just do the same with the mandatory speed at 80.

Most of the drivers doing 80 now will still be breaking the law because they will simply increase their speed to 90.

I have no problem with 80 mph on the motorway, my diesel gets better economy at that than at 70 in top gear.

Enforce it strictly, average speed cameras and no excuses. Speedos are much more precise now, so anyone speeding gets a ticket, anyone wildly over gets a progressive ban, say a month for 85, six for 90, year for 100.

If you can prove your speedo is inaccurate, a fine for that, another for the speed and get it fixed within 28 days.

In which case why not take the motorway limit up to 100 mph? It is not as if some of the vehicles cannot cope. Real and actual stopping distances are lower than the Highway Code, plus drivers will drive at a limit they feel comfortable at. The law about driving without due care and attention would still be applicable if an accident were to occur even below the speed limit. Plus the M25 has variable speed limits anyway.

Indeed, some is the operative word.
And as you say, there are variable speed limits on some roads.

I don't see a problem with it, and I doubt if we'll see everyone doing 90 just because they can - I suspect that if you're the sort of chap who does 90 in a 70, you'll carry on doing 90 in an 80.
What I doubt is that if you're comfortable (and can afford to) do 80, then you'll carry on doing 80. Except this time, you won't be criminalised for doing so.

Fact is, ever since we've all been hit with the poor hammer, average speeds have dropped.

There was (is?) a ban in place for exceeding the posted limit by 30mph - does this mean you can avoid an automatic ban despite being caught doing 109mph?

I think they should focus more on clamping down on people who drive too slowly or hog overtaking lanes.

I do like the idea of lower speeds in towns. Though we need really low speeds outside schools with speed cameras. Though a better idea is ban parents dropping their kids off at school by car. Let them walk or catch a bus. I did.

+1 for drivers increasing their speed. TBH at the moment, I don't think anyone gets prosecuted for 80mph on the motorway, and IMO that's how it should be left. Don't tell anyone.

The problem is that NSL is 80mph in most of Europe so we're being brought into line with that.

As for 20mph speed limits, fine where appropriate but who defines that appropriateness? I think it should be limited to specific areas eg outside schools/afterschool clubs/nursing homes etc.

Speeding isn't the main reason behind most fatal accidents (something like 5%), it's driver behaviour - driving too fast for the conditions (eg 70mph in torrential rain with poor visibility), not looked (eg blind spot), distraction (mobile phone, radio etC).
