Early computing pioneer undergoes final upload

Stanford University has confirmed that John McCarthy, the inventor of the LISP programming language and one of the pioneers of artificial intelligence (AI), has died at the age of 84.

Among developers, McCarthy may be best known as the inventor of Lisp, which he devised in 1958 while at MIT and published in the seminal work "Recursive Functions of Symbolic Expressions and Their Computation by Machine, Part I.” Lisp was originally developed for AI applications, but was quickly adopted by the industry, gained enormous popularity among developers, and is still in use today as part of Common Lisp and Scheme.

First Dennis Ritchie and now McCarthy.

We are coming to the end of the generation that brought us a lot of the innovation in the computer and micro electronics industries. :(

Do we have that many big innovators in the younger generations? People who created something awesome? We are more in the phase where large groups work together and collaborate on projects, but there seems much less space for the pioneer spirit these days. Are the innovators disappearing in the crowd?

I could name a few, but not many. Most seem to be entrepeneurs, like Jobs, Page, Brin, Gates, Schmit etc. but real inventors seem few and far between. Maybe Brin and Page, with their search algorithm?

We have big names, like Sinofski of Ive, but Sinofski runs a development team, he isn't single handedly responsible for something. Dave Cutler, maybe, he wrote a vast chunk of VMS, then moved to Microsoft and created NT... But he is also the older generation, not the younger generation.

Anyway, back from the digression. Rest in Peace. He was another great name and deserves our respect.
