Footage of a Boeing 767 landing with no landing gear. More excellent piloting skills - 230+ lives saved. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-15543209

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Is it wrong of me to think that sort of thing is cool?
Better to have no landing gear than having gear down on one side but not the other.

Almost certainly. The tail section is always reenforced to guard against tail strikes (over rotation) and the engines will always be well protected.

To be honest, it's not that incredible, it just looks that way.
