Is it wrong of me to think that sort of thing is cool?

Better to have no landing gear than having gear down on one side but not the other.

I'd imagine so. It's the sort of thing they cover in testing, isn't it?

Almost certainly. The tail section is always reenforced to guard against tail strikes (over rotation) and the engines will always be well protected.
