Quote:
At least six people died and a further eight were seriously hurt last night in a "horrific" motorway pile-up involving 26 cars and lorries in wet and foggy conditions.

Four people had to be cut out of the wreckage on the M5 and four vehicles, two of them lorries, burst into flames and were still burning long after the emergency services reached the scene.

More than 50 people were hurt in the crash close to junction 25 of the northbound carriageway of the M5 near Taunton in Somerset, with 41 hospitalised. A further 13 were treated at the scene. The motorway has been closed to traffic between junctions 23 to 26 and is expected to remain shut in both directions until at least this evening.

Although official confirmation of the death toll had not been given, Avon and Somerset Police said: "It is believed that people have lost their lives."...

...Poor weather conditions have been cited as a likely factor in the crash, though the precise cause was being investigated.

There's no such thing as poor weather, only piss-poor driving.

What's the betting that a bunch of dickheads were driving too fast and too close to the vehicle in front?

Absolutely.
There's almost never a single cause for an accident - it's usually a confluence of factors that leads into it.
They probably drove like that without incident every day of their lives, and then add in some poor visibility (was it wet? Double you braking distance then), they don't account for it and now people are dead.

Poor weather was a factor but not the cause. As above, weather conditions will influence road conditions and hence driving habits should be adjusted. I've seen people drive 100mph in poor weather where the rain is so heavy, even with the wipers on double-speed, you can't see ahead far enough to travel more than 40-50mph.

I'd be willing to bet it was someone joining on the slip road, not looking properly, causing one of the lorries to swerve. Add in poor visibility on an unlit section of motorway, fog/mist and the possibility of drifting smoke from a fireworks event nearby.

I wonder if they even realised anything had happened behind them...

Nasty business all round.

I agree Heather. The accident from the photos I was seeing on the news looked right on top of a slip road.

Guessing they're going to have to completely resurface that section - with winter round the corner, this is going to roll on and on I suspect, unless they can patch it and accept it'll be rubbish until the spring.

There should only ever be two vehicles involved in an accident as a maximum. As you say, everyone else is too close and fast.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

There’s no excuse for that kind of driving. I like to have a bit of space between the car in front and myself. I know the brakes are good, but theirs may not be. Then some idiot slews in to the gap and hurls the anchor out because (surprisingly) the car is front is not going as fast as expected. That means either necessary braking or (at one time), a very hasty lane change. I’m just glad that my car can handle that kind of emergency manoeuvring. I know that my previous car (a more ordinary Skoda) may have struggled with that one. All I can say is thanks you to Karmann, Mercedes and Chrysler for getting me out of a scrape safely.

As above. The vast majority of accidents are due to bad driving.

Unlikely, there are usually maintenance contracts for motorways and major trunk roads - I've had more than my fair share of midnight calls for emergency resurfacing jobs.

Not my problem anymore though. I really do not miss being on callout.

It's conceivable that one moving truck could take out an entire row of stationary vehicles, but I agree with the general idea that people really should drive in such a way that avoids piling into the back of other people...

It's all speculation at the moment, but as an observation the majority of lorries I pass nowadays the driver inside is frickin texting.

Local news has been suggesting it could have been to do with smoke from a fireworks display at the rugby club next to the motorway.

If you see a wall of smoke coming up, then you should slow to a safe speed before you get there.
Sorry, but from a technical point of view I can't see how anyone's to blame except the drivers of the cars that rear ended people.

Depends if it came on slowly or if it was sudden. Could also have been rubbernecking (one of my bugbears) as someone tried to look and didn't realise what was happening around them.
