They might be "important" to the game industry, but the game industry isn't important to society, when times get hard... |

I disagree, the gaming industry had a gross revenue of £2.87 billion in the U.K. in 2010. I think it's very important to society, economically speaking, both from the revenue stream and job creation. |

There's going to be a market for bricks-and-mortar games stores for many years to come, simply because parents like to take their kids there to spend their birthday money. It's more of an instant "high" to come out of a shop clutching something shiny than it is to click "buy now" on-line. Whether there's a big enough market for specialist high street video games stores, or whether the likes of Toys'R'us and the supermarkets can run them out of business is another question. The death knoll has long been chiming for the high street, but last time I checked* it was still there and still busy. *I can't remember when that was - probably c. 2005 |

Actually the games industry was one of the few areas to fare well during the recession, why go out to see a film when for £10 you can get a game that will last you 10+ hours The cost of entertainment is for many games lower than that of other medium, and the 2nd hand market is strong with a lot of popular games holding their value for a decent length of time |

Why spend £10 on a game, when I can go to the library and borrow a book which will last me a few days, and I can buy food with the £10... ![]() |

![]() My mum works in a library, she spends more time handing out free condoms to teenagers or chucking them off the computers than lending books to them. Yes, they really do have to give out condoms at the library now... ![]() |

This is the sort of thing we usually hear just before a company goes under. |

That's just what I was thinking. If console makers go for digital content rather than boxes games for the next gen consoles, these shops will be screwed as they rely on the second hand games market to survive. |
