Oh, dear. Another Clarkson fuelled spat.

Quote:
Jeremy Clarkson should be sacked by the BBC over his "appalling" comments about killing striking public sector workers, trade union Unison has said.

The union said it was considering reporting the Top Gear presenter to the police over comments on The One Show.

Referring to striking workers, Mr Clarkson said: "I'd have them all shot. I would take them outside and execute them in front of their families."

He’s only saying what Cameron’s thinking.

Sack Jeremy Clarkson over strike comments, Unison urges

During The One Show, Mr Clarkson also made a remark about people who threw themselves in front of trains.

Seriously, do these people have no sense of humour?
I mean, anyone who's even vaguely aware of Clarkson knows he only says these things for a cheap laugh.
Of course he's not abdicating a mass cull of public sector workers!!

They must be getting ready to air a new series of Top Gear. Clarkson usually courts some kind of controversy prior to a new series being screened, then takes the p!ss out of those he has outraged; on the show.

It's not that big a deal is it?

I'm actually surprised by David Cameron's response - very level-headed. As for Ed Millibot, I could have written his response before he spoke.

I'm guessing the apology that was made on air was after Clarkson had left the studio?

I could well see the following happen otherwise:

Presenter: "We'd just like to say that we're sorry for any offence caused by those earlier comments"

Clarkson: "I'm not".

You are aware what festival is approaching yes? And how Clarkson earns his corn when not being the tall inept one on television?

It was in particularly poor taste but it's not as if Clarkson is in charge of anything important. I suspect the top gear staff don't even allow him to play with the sharp cutlery ffs.

The Unison response is particularly badly thought out, IMO. The last thing they need to look like right now is a bunch of over-sensitive prima-donnas.

Over 23,000 complaints so far, that's not bad going for JC.

I wonder if he keeps score?

I'm reminded of that episode of Top Gear when he reverses the 'Bentley Mulsanne' into a wall. James May turns to Richard Hammond and says "You know, I think he might actually be a massive idiot".

The people complaining about this are the same kind of people who got that guy sentenced for saying he'd blow up Robin Hood airport on Twitter.

It was obviously a "joke" and he obviously didn't mean it.

OK, it was a bit of a stupid thing to say but he's got exactly the reaction he was looking for.

Clarkson is the court jester. He plays the fool. It's his schtick. It's what he does. He exaggerates his act to a high degree, because he knows what he might say provokes controversy.

When you see what he said in context on the One Show, he was being satirical. He initially said he agreed with the strike and what it stood for, and then said "as this is the BBC we have to be balanced and impartial, so I think all strikers should be shot ..." and so on. Taken out of context, a red rag to a bull and engineered to garner complaints and knee-jerk reactions.

My view is you should never, ever, take anything Clarkson says or writes as in any way meant to be anything more than publicity for himself. Smile, groan, complain or whatever, but move on. No news here, nothing to see, move along.
