http://harrogate-news.co.uk/2011/12/06/ ... poppleton/ I'm surprised this isn't a story about the cyclist trying to find the boy. The boy wasn't paying attention and nearly caused someone injury. He's lucky it was only a cycle lane. |

WTF? So they're trying to trace a cyclist because a little sh!t wasn't paying attention and caused an accident. I don't understand this story. |

Uhm, who should've been watching what was going on in front of him? Sounds like a cyclist who wasn't paying much attention or anticipation of the hazard ahead caused injury to a child. An accident is never due to a single failing, it's the combination of factors. The cyclist also grabbed a hold of the injured child (that'll be assault then). |

With a cyclist being in a cycle lane at 08:15 on a Monday morning, is there not a chance he'll be in the same cycle lane within ± half an hour on Tuesday morning. And Wednesday morning. And Thursday morning... Surely worth a shout by some bobby if they *really* want to talk to him. He doesn't exactly sound like he's on the run. |

Yeah, but assault? Anyhoo, not sure why it's taking so long to find him to chat with him about it:

Not actually legally true. Plus, philosophically, I'm not in favour of any rule or law which removes the requirement from anyone to have some semblance of personsal responsibility. If you (or indeed, I) do something stupid it shouldn't be on someone else's shoulders to bear the consequences. Jon |

8:15am on a Monday. The guy was probably cycling to work. Option 1: Keep it quiet and stake out the cycle track between 8 and 9am for a day or two, and stop any male cyclist with a grey bike. Option 2: Make a song and dance about it, ensuring he takes a different route to work; and you never catch him. ![]() [edit] didn't see Edd's post. ![]() |

Do they? - even on a cycle way? Also try and exert you "Right of Way" on the M1 - jump in front of a lorry shouting "I have the right of Way!" ![]() |

That wouldn't work anyway.
http://www.cbrd.co.uk/roadsfaq/#412 It's not so long ago that big blue signs outlining prohibited traffic appeared at the start of each entry slip road. |

If the cyclist doesn't want damages or to press a complaint, I don't see where the problem is... ![]() |

If you jump off a bridge with the thought to kill yourself, but a vehicle hits you and badly injures you (before you hit the road), could you then press charges because it was your right of way? </ponders> |

No, but if said pedestrian stepped out into the road and you hit him you could easily be up on charges of driving without due care and attention. As HeatherKay has pointed out, pedestrians are specifically banned from motorways, but all other roads are fair game for pedestrians. |

I can see it now. Car driver to policeman "I'm sorry officer but he (pedestrian) was all over the road and I had to swerve several times before I hit him" ![]() |
