I couldn't agree more. The second phase of trials sounds a bit hairy mind and I wonder if they'll be able to collect enough data from 6000 people. Still, an important and encouraging step in the fight against HIV/AIDS. |

Remember when drugs that helped HIV patients came out and it took ages for them to reach Afica due to the cost? I can see a similar thing happening here. |

While I'm depressingly sure you are correct there are some differences between a drug that is a treatment for a condition and a vaccine that prevents you (or significantly reduces the risk) of getting ill. From a drug companies point of view curing a condition is about the worst possible thing they can do as it means they only get to sell the product once per infection. Something that is required for long term treatment is a much more attractive prospect unless the disease kills very quickly (in which case the opportunity for long term treatment is diminished) or the bulk of the 'at risk' population can't or won't buy your product anyway. A drug company that tries to get in the way of or make significant profits from a vaccine will be something of a pariah from a PR point of view so it will be an interesting debate assuming the vaccine gets through trials. There are also significant cultural and religious barriers that get in the way of treating HIV as well. I'm sure, for example, that various religions will have a rather epic amount to say about something that reduces the risk of contracting a fatal disease prevalent amongst sinners. ![]() |
