An international lobbying company tried to remove references to a client's brand of lager as the "wife beater" from the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.

Stella Artois used to market itself under the slogan "reassuringly expensive" but became popularly known in Britain as the "wife beater" beer

Although more of a Bitter man in the summer I enjoy a cold lager and do ask for a "Pint of Wife Beater" in some pubs - they generally know what you are asking for

The term is surely too pervasive, particularly in the UK, to have removed? It's in common usage just about everywhere I've been in England & Wales.

I agree. If you ask for a pint of Wife Beater, everyone knows you want a pint of Stella.

Anyone who asks for a pint of Stella should be beaten, just for having such bad taste in alcoholic beverages.

You can understand them wanting to protect the brand, but the floodgates have been wide open for quite some time now.

This sort of thing will only become more frequent in the future I think. I recall some talk of a wannabee celeb being paid not to wear a certain brand early last year (no more information as I didn't chase it up), and Lacoste had a complaint when Anders Breivic wore their clothing in his manifesto and court appearances.

Not so much 'brand conscious' as 'brand paranoid'.

Stella tastes like cutlery that hasn't had ALL the Fairy Liquid wiped off

I don't mind Stella, sometimes it's just perfectly acceptable.
In some pubs I've been in, wife-beater's becoming acceptable for any lager.

To be honest, the same can be said for most lagers found in any British pub. People may say otherwise, but I'm sure it's just variants of different cats p1$$.

On the subject on alcoholic beverages, why does no one sell a warm pint? I want to TASTE my beer, not have my teeth chattering!

You might've answered your own question in a roundabout way ;)

You definitely don't want to taste lager, there's a reason you get super-cold Carling, Fosters etc.

Not sure if you have a Morrisons near you LU, but up in Aber they are doing a fantastic beer - Celt Golden Crafted Ale. Really nice with a blue cheese and pickled things.

I'll give it a look, thanks. By the same token if you ever get to try "Doom Bar" or "Tribute" (both from Cornwall) I heartily recommend them.

"Doom Bar" I am quite fond of, they sell it in a pub back home sometimes. Tribute I'm not so keen on, but then again it might be that the pubs I've had it in haven't looked after their lines properly.
