This will be some kind of licencing cock-up. I sincerely doubt they're actually pirating OS discs. |

It's reminded me of the scandalous prices the DSG charge for driver discs ![]() |

Aye. The statement doesn't mention licence infringement or non-payment of licence fees, it's straight to counterfeit, do not pass go etc. |

I can't imagine a company ever thinking they could get away with this, so I'm liable to think cock up. |

I'm sure it's a cock-up of some sort, probably a misunderstanding of the licence terms. Note the important phrase "recovery CDs" All the PCs were being sold with Windows pre-installed, and when you boot up the machine for the first time it offers to make you a "recovery CD". These machines are not shipped with physical media - but of course, Comet will sell you one. Except they did it wrong. |

I've made any number of recovery discs/sticks down the years following the exact instructions given, few have worked, and I've seen other peoples' partitions fail and all ![]() |

When will PC manufacturers realise that "recovery partitions" just aren't that useful? |

good grief. I never really saw the point of a recovery partition on the internal disk. In my experience of PCs, hard drive failure is by far the most common thing to go wrong anyway, so it's an entirely spurious gesture at reliability. Sadly, Apple seem to have taken to doing the same stupid trick with Lion, although they do at least have a utility available for download which will clone the recovery partition to a bootable USB drive and the system they have on new hardware to remote boot a recovery partition over the internet is an interesting solution. Telling OEMS they specifically can't ship a separate recovery disk with their systems is oafish nonsense. Much as I would be amused to see Comet get some sort of legal shoeing, in this case they were at least providing something useful to their customers. Jon |

If I'm reading that correctly, I should get a CD/DVD with Windows on it every time I buy a Windows PC. That hasn't happened for me since 2003, so either I'm reading it wrong or Microsoft really don't care. |

Correct. It's up to the OEM to provide it, you can report them to Microsoft if they don't. If you phone any OEM and request recovery media for a new machine they will send it to you for free (providing it's within the first year or so) |
