Good on them. Although that'll be the day I find I'll need to use it more than ever no doubt

It's a good idea to draw attention to what the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is all about but I, too, find myself looking up stuff on Wikipedia most days so it will be a long 24 hours without it.

The problem is, the sites which threatened to close their doors will probably go unnoticed by those debating the act...

Just this on the home page now...

Image

I like the fact when you click "Learn more" you're taken to a standard Wikipedia page, that's a nice touch!

Good for them for making a stance, I doubt most students will agree today, but there you go. Better a day of slight inconvenience (and a chance for them to do some proper old style research in the library!) than to let this bill go through without a fight.

I've never understood why politicians only listen to the lobbiests of massive record companies......
Oh wait.... "donations", massive massive "donations". [LIFTED].

And there is this:
http://blog.curry.com/stories/2012/01/1 ... rring.html

Quote:
Actually there are 3 pieces of legislation; the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) and the Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act (OPEN,) which is currently in draft form, initially proposed by Darrel Issa (R) who will be holding a hearing on Wednesday regarding the strong opposition to DNS 'tampering' as a punitive measure against foreign registered websites infringing on intellectual property and trademarks of US companies within the borders of the United States.

Quote:
It's been highly underreported that ICANN is now accepting submissions for new gTLD's, or 'generic top level domains'.

Without getting into all the details of what that means, other than possibly hundreds if not thousands of new domains like .shop .dork .shill and .drone that you will be able to register vanity domain names under, ICANN has come up with a new requirement upon registration:

You must verify who you are when you register a new domain name, even an international one.

So, if I pay GoDaddy or any other outfit my $9 for curry.blog and have it point to my server at blog.curry.com, I will have to prove my identity upon registration. Presumably with some form of government approved ID.

This way, when OPEN or perhaps a non-NDS-version of SOPA is passed, if you break the rules, you will be hunted down, regardless of where you live or operate since this also includes international domain names.

Disable JavaScript in your browser. Wikipedia works as normal.

I would have though a simple .htaccess file to divert to the black page would be more efficient.

That was deliberate, as explained in the article:

Is it still possible to access Wikipedia in any way?

Yes. During the blackout, Wikipedia is accessible on mobile devices and smart phones. You can also view Wikipedia normally by disabling JavaScript in your browser, as explained on this Technical FAQ page. Our purpose here isn't to make it completely impossible for people to read Wikipedia, and it's okay for you to circumvent the blackout. We just want to make sure you see our message.

Can I have a copy of the latest version of the internet, if you have it to hand?

I didn’t get that far at the time. I just saw the page load as normal, then it blacked out a while later. This just said “JavaScript” to me, so I tried with that system disabled.
