Megaupload, one of the internet's largest file-sharing sites, has been shut down by officials in the US.

The site's founders have been charged with violating piracy laws.

Federal prosecutors have accused it of costing copyright holders more than $500m (£320m) in lost revenue. The firm says it was diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.

Mixed feelings about this to be honest

The questions I have:

- what will happen to subscribers (ie those who paid to download faster)?
- what will happen to other file-sharing sites eg rapidshare?

Presumably all information about Megaupload users is now in US hands? Should keep the US courts busy for a long time to come.

Apparently, the guy was a mafioso, had cars with plates like "Evil", "God" etc. Also looks like MU will be resurrected off US soil so there's no US jurisdiction.

I thought they were based in Hong Kong not the USA? Hence my earlier rant about America "World Police".

They moved their servers to US soil which is why they could go after them.

Megaupload users face data deletion

Quote:
US prosecutors have said that data belonging to Megaupload users and stored by third parties could be deleted as soon as Thursday.

Users have been unable to access data since the file-sharing service was raided.

The warning was made in a letter filed by the US Attorney's Office, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Megaupload's lawyer Ira Rothken told the agency that at least 50 million users had data which could be deleted.

That's... interesting. They seem to be making the assumption that all the data there is illegal. All it takes is two people with legit data on there and you've got a class action lawsuit against the government and the MPAA. Could be fun.
