Christians who argue they should be exempt from equality laws are no different from Muslims who want to impose sharia law in the UK, human rights chief Trevor Phillips has said.

He told a debate religious rules should lose sway "at the door of the temple".

In some ways, I agree and in some ways I don't.

In medicine, if a patient comes to me asking for a termination of pregnancy, I can refer them on. However, if I feel it's against my religion/morals/own belief system, then I don't have to. However, I do have a duty of care to the patient and hence should refer them on to someone who can deal with their request.

What this means is I don't have to do xyz but I do have to ensure the patient gets seen by someone who can do xyz. If I can do this in medicine, why can it not be extended to other situations? Eg that Christian couple who turned the gays away - instead of just saying no, the equivalent would be to redirect them to a place that they could stay?

 Keep an eye out for the end of the world : I just agreed with L3v1ck and L_U on an issue of religious conscience.

I know the feeling, I had the shocking realisation today that I agreed with the leader of the Labour party about something (NHS reforms). Sobered me right up that did.

And agreed on the above.
