On a more serious note, they would be pretty handy if they could be written to at any sort of speed. It takes a reasonable while to fill up a DVD or Blu-ray disk. You'd need a quick burner (and a lot of stuff) to fill one of those things. I don't think they are anywhere near ready for mass use yet but eventually, they could be useful.

Depends if it’s an air brick or not, I suppose.

It would be comparatively slow writing though.

Well that's fancy ain't it. Still by the time it comes out the entire principle of a disk will most likely be outdated.

I suppose they could be useful for backup - just depends on how much they cost compared to LTO and how long they last for...

I must have 100 or more DVDs and CDs with my backups on. It would be nice if it all fitted on a couple of disks.

At the moment, I'm using hard drives because they take up less space!

You can already get that kind of size of tape, which is proven if slow technology. For home backups it's be great though.

Assuming 500GB native it would be somewhere between LTO3 and 4.

But an optical disc is a lot more simple than a LTO tape so I would have thought would have been cheaper.

I can imagine it would be easier to store ten thousand CD cases than ten thousand LTO tapes! :)

Today I regularly use:
2006 MacBook
2011 iMac
2011 Mac Mini
iPhone 4

The MacBooks optical drive is fudged while the Mac Mini and iPhone don't have optical drives...
