Quote:
Representatives of 21 of the EU’s member states, including the UK, have signed off on the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) – the European version of the US SOPA and PIPA rolled into one and cranked up to 11.

Only Cyprus, Germany, Estonia, Slovakia, and the Netherlands have held off on signing the treaty, which will give authorities even more power to enforce copyright than was contained in aforementioned online-piracy legislation currently on hold in the US.

Hopefully it won't be ratifed.

Shame this didn't get the media attention that SOPA and PIPA did. But when deals are done behind closed doors....

It will most likely sail through the European Parliament, the pro-business EPP are the largest group after all.

I believe it goes against the German constitution, which is probably one of the reasons that they haven't signed.

The EU Court is supposed to be reviewing the legality of ACTA at the moment - although trying to prove that it isn't as bad as protestors believe.

Singing *It's the end of the World wide web as we know it...*

I should point out that it's a really biased article with many inaccuracies, but the fact remains that the US legal system can shut down any .com it thinks they have a case against. And that shuts it down world-wide, not just on their own soil like the Chinese would do.
