Chelmsford has been awarded city status as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

MP Simon Burns said he was delighted the town would become the first city in Essex.

And Medway has missed out. Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Before Medway was created by munging together Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood and Rainham, Rochester was an actual pukka City in its own right. Some idiot, however, forgot to send a form in to renew the charter when it came up. They've been embarrassed by it ever since.

And now they've been rebuffed by the Diamond Jubilee thing, too. Life is sweet sometimes.

Sadly, the Marconi factory is past its best.

Good. I'm glad Doncaster didn't get city status. It's not big enough and is soooooooo badly run (I know people who worked for the council).

Can we please stop awarding city status to small, insignifcant places. I can't say I've been to Chelmsford, but does awarding city status to places such as this not cheapen city status?

What's next, Middlesbrough?

I agree with you on Chelmsford - its population is below 100,000.

However, Middlesbrough has a population of 142,000 and Teeside a population of 365,000.

Middlesbrough should be a city.

Does anyone want Belfast? I'm starting to think things were better before the high street 'brands' showed up...
