Coffee chain Starbucks has begun asking its UK customers their names in a bid to appear more friendly. But do people really want to be on first name terms with their barista?

Just got your head around waiting in line and remembering whether you ordered a grande flavoured latte, a tall caramel macchiato or a venti mocha light frappuccino?

To be honest, if they are doing this so I know that my drink is ready, then I’m not that fussed. Rather that than get in the way of the other tea drinker huddled around the dispensary waiting for their drink.

That said, I do get nervous with people calling me by name at times. It took me ages to get sued to the garage where I got my first (and subsequent Skodas) calling me “sir” or “Mr …” - eventually we got to first name terms, which was better. My Bank Manager can keep on being formal as far as I am concerned. The people who tinker with my car and the vets? I prefer a less formal relationship.

I did. Went in, asked for a free latte. All they wanted was my first name which they then called out when my coffee was ready. I doubt they will remember it as I rarely go in there.

They've been doing this for years...I've certainly had this asked of me in Cardiff and Bath stores, the latter for about 8 years.

+1, always get asked for my name in Cardiff, which is really annoying as they write it on the cup and it isn't even for me...

Wouldn't be surprised to see someone tell them an amusing name, then video it as they shout out...

"Norma Stits? Latte for Norma Stits?"

...there's bound to be some posted on YouTube later!

Yes and I don't care.

Not worth getting worked up on things like that, life's too short. Tell them your name and get on with it, their staff will hate this new policy as much as anybody and they'll get plenty of abuse even without yours. And if you're thinking about saying some funny name that Bart Simpson would use, then don't. They've probably heard it milion times before and they won't find it tiny bit funny...

Saying that, I only go to Starbucks when I am desperate for the coffee and there's nothing better around. My first choise is Costa, followed by Pret and Nero.
Best coffe I've had in my life was at Workman's cafe on Broad street in Reading, by the George hotel. Simply amazing...

Starbucks has to have the worst coffee of all the high street brands. :x

The company I work for is the UK distributor of Illy Coffee and made properly it tastes quite nice :)

At home though quite happy with Kenco.

Starbucks "Could I ask your name please."
Me "I don't think that's any of your business."

Not that I ever use Starbucks, but that's what would happen if I did.
