Mine has got a little warm down the left hand side, but nowhere as hot as the article suggests. I've already done a first recharge, so I'll et the battery drain until the thing shuts down and recharge and see if that makes a difference.

I would expect an iOS update to address the problem soon.

What do you think the problem is then?

If it's a battery charge issue, then with firmware in the battery and charger I guess they can moderate the peak rates and fix the problem with an update.

If it's something more fundamental, like the GFX running hot under stress, then that will take a redesign or an update that cripples performance. Of course, that's exactly the kind of problem which would only be noticed by about the reported number of people since most people won't stress it.

The fact it's apparently only happening to some new iPads suggests it's not a fundamental design issue, more likely a dodgy component batch or quality control failure. I suspect we have to wait a bit and see exactly how prevalent it is before we make any judgements about how difficult remedying it might be.

Usually, over heating is caused by an unregulated process running and causing more battery load than normal. My iPad 1 would get warm when running intensive jobs, like 3D games, and you'd see a battery drain to go with it. A tweak may be all that s necessary.

App,e check submitted apps and will reject them if they cause the iPad to get hot, so they are certainly looking for that kind of thing from third party developers.

If it's a design flaw, dodgy component batch or quality control failure then an update isn't going to fix it. That will need a recall. That was my primary point - not many complaints like this can be fixed over the wire.

We need more details, and given how many Apple have sold I suspect they'll have plenty of examples to examine and come up with an answer in the next few weeks. Until then, speculation is just that.

You should feel how hot my HTC phone gets when the Sat-Nav's on and it's plugged into the car charger!

You'll never hear me say the HTC doesn't get really hot or doesn't run it's battery out quickly

My Netbook gets pretty hot, and I've nearly burned myself on a couple of laptops.

However, Apple customers don't expect such things. And neither should they at that price!

Or people who are spending hours at a time playing 3D games, which are pushing the processor hard.

The first MacBook Air had similar problems with getting hot, if people were running applications which used a lot of processor and graphics power (video editing, photo editing etc.). They weren't designed for such hard work, so they got warmer than expected for that small proportion of users.

It looks like they learnt their lesson with the current MacBook Airs. I've just read a review of a bunch of Ultrabooks and the HP did badly, with the comment "HP messed up on the fans, they are the loudest of any of the Ultrabooks we have tested and only the MacBook Airs are louder."

How can the HP fans be the loudest if the MB Air's are louder? :?

from my reading

Quote:

Suggests they haven't actually tested the macbook air, they just anecdotally believe it's fans are louder.

Because the macbook air isn't technically an ultrabook

It is the loudest Ultrabook. The MacBook Air isn't an Ultrabook, it is a MacBook Air - Intel created the "Ultrabook" brand to develop similar machines to the MBA, which aren't Apple. So, basically in this segment of ultra thin notebooks, the HP is the loudest Windows based machine, but the MacBook Air is louder.

This was in c't magazine, from heise Verlag. They are a very good and reputable magazine, which is very platform independent - they cover all platforms (Windows, Linux, OS X, iOS, Android etc.) in equal detail and are equally critical of each platform. They also bring in a lot of experts on subjects, instead of leaving it to staff writers - the latest Ivy Bridge announcement was covered by a 12 page review of the new processor architecture and advancements it brings, minute details in how the new support chips work etc. all written by an expert in the field.

Gotcha. I think.
Isn't that like saying 'The diesel Vauxhall people carrier was the noisiest we tested, with only the John Deere tractor being louder.' then? ;)
Comparing apples and oranges?
