A first-class stamp will cost 60p from 30 April after the regulator removed price controls on Royal Mail.

A second-class stamp will cost 50p - some 5p below the top price allowed under the changes made by Ofcom.

Yay, privatisation here we come!

The only plus side to this is the possibility of less junk mail in my post box.

Much of my junk mail comes via the competition anyway, so it won't effect them until the other mail services put their prices up to match.

Why don't we take a leaf out of Osborne's book and have regional pricing for the Royal Mail! We could have it so that is cost 10p to post a letter in Newcastle, 'cos everything's horrendously cheap there, and have it cost £4 to send a letter from London. It's genius!

So... If I buy 2000 Second class stamps at £684 and sell them after the price rise, I wonder how much money I could make... :ugeek:

Aren't stamps technically legal tender (assuming you can find somewhere that will accept them as payment)?

So that's... twelve shillings to post a first class letter - with no guarantee of it getting anywhere, in any specific time-frame??

I think they're redefining the First Class and second class systems.
The First Class service should be used for the sorts of letters that you'd have round for dinner.
The second class service should be used for the sorts of letters your staff might associate with.

I was thinking perhaps the government could force a 'third class' stamp, much like they did on the railway.

I then felt somewhat sad for instantly recognising the 158 and feeling the need to find out if it was one of ours

I said something similar when they went on strike, and got a lot of abuse for not supporting them.

However, I work for a business and not a charity.

In Denmark a stamp is the best part of 1 pound. Not only that but they have just introduced a new law whereby your post box must be on the edge of your property, so the postie doesn't have to get off his scooter.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
