This is why parents in the UK are not usually told which sex their baby is when they go in for scans during pregnancy, at least at many hospitals. Female children are routinely aborted in some cultures.

From what I've seen, you get asked if you want to know or not in the UK, without there being any problem if you want to know (subject to them actually being able to tell on the scan of course!) I can definitely appreciate in certain cultures that it would be unwise to do so. In the UK at least it is illegal to terminate on the basis of gender.

It varies from NHS trust to NHS trust.
Derby were happy to tell us the sex if we wanted to know. Firends of ours who live near Aberdeen were told that they didn't give out the baby's gender anymore.

It depends on the local population. When I worked in Obs and Gynae, there was a huge asian population and no one was told the gender of the baby until birth.
There is still a huge stigma of having baby girls. A lot appears to be down to dowry/cost of marriage. If you could eradicate this or switch it round (ie make it financially better for people to have girls) then you'd have a change in culture. What they don't understand is that if there's lots of boys and very few girls, how the fudge are they gonna find a suitable partner for their son?
