"If God and moral values, the difference between good and evil, remain in darkness, then all other lights, that put such incredible technical feats within our reach, are not only progress but also dangerous, which put us and the world at risk."

It's you that's in the dark old man, it's no wonder you think the 'technical feats' are so dangerous. You might get away with it if you were actually in a position to link morality to ANYTHING these days.

If God and moral values = paedo priests
the difference between good and evil, remain in darkness = keeping children quiet
then all other lights, that put such incredible technical feats within our reach = childline
are not only progress but also dangerous, which put us and the world at risk. = childline + childline's website

I think that sounds about right for them

There is a chart out the which postulates that if we had not had the Christian dominated history, as a race, we would be space faring by now.

A chart based on vast supposition, from the sounds of it.

I disagree - a lot of advances have been made by religious people in an attempt to "understand the watchmaker".

I don't know how accurate this is: clicky. There were also notable advances made by muslims.

Tell that to Galileo.

true. But it is also true that during the dark ages in Europe the churches were the only people who maintained the skill to create the written word. If they hadn't, it would have taken us god (hah) knows how long to retrieve what is, IMO, the most fundamental skill required for scientific and philosophical development in Europe.

I have no idea if the church's influence as a whole throughout history has been overall malevolent or benign but I think there are probably a lot of examples where it has been one or the other and it would be hugely subjective to create some arbitrary summation of those.

And he would agree, being one of them himself. Most of the trouble he got into was more down to politics than anything else.

Can't help but feel that the catholics are being staggeringly selective over which bits of the Bible they want to work with. The above would seem rather pertinent in the circumstances.
