Cool. Literately. "while MIT's diode puts out more than twice as much energy in photons as it's fed in electrons, it doesn't violate the conservation of energy because it appears to draw in heat energy from its surroundings instead. When it gets more than 100 percent electrically-efficient, it begins to cool down, stealing energy from its environment to convert into more photons."Of course, you'd need over 9000 of them for a useful amount of light since we're talking picowatts. clicky

Low powered LED bulb? Shops will be selling it as a GU10 replacement in no time, even if it does produce sod all light. It took me ages to find good LED bulbs.

i hope this gets further developed, could be pretty sweet for screen backlights in tablet PCs where battery life/cooling is a problem.
"look at my screen. look again, the screen is now a heatsink!! anything is possible when you use science."

A picowatt really is very tiny. I suspect this effect will stay in the same realm as high-temperature superconductors for quite a long time.
Of course, I hope I'm wrong. If the effect could be scaled to a more macroscopic level, the applications are enormous.
