Car insurance costs are set to be studied by the Competition Commission after the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) said the market was "dysfunctional".

The OFT says artificially high car hire and repair charges add £225m a year to drivers' premiums and it wants the commission to investigate the sector.

It says some insurers connive with garages and suppliers of courtesy cars to let them charge inflated prices.

Here's an idea. Ban claims for whiplash and don't pay these blame and claim companies twice the going rate when they win over 90% of cases. Just let them claim 110% of the going rate, not 200%.

Or set the maximum that a claim company can get in cost = to 50% of the damages so if the average whiplash claim is say £2000 (and I have no idea what it is) then the max that a claim company can get is £1000 which I bet is a lot less than they get now. Most would I hope not bother except for "real" cases where the award would be larger

Having gotten it from an accident I don't agree with this.

It should be allowed, but done via a 3rd party service and ambulance chasers shouldnt be allowed

(The payout I got has been used up pretty much and I'm having to pay for occasional treatment out of my own pocket for treatment on my shoulder/neck for things like physio and I can't it on the NHS as it's not a constant issue)

Let’s say just an “imperial entanglement” and leave it at that. ;)

My sister was involved in a 3 car accident. She hit the car in front which in turn hit the car in front of it just slightly. There was not damage in that collision but the driver of the lead car got shouting how she had whiplash and generally making a whole song and dance about it.

Really? I've had whiplash, and the onset wasn't immediate. I was in a neck brace for weeks.

Sod. Off.

I suffered whiplash in a car accident and it has affected my long-term health, I still get pains in my neck and migraines to this day, 9 years on. Now you're telling me I shouldn't have been compensated for it.

I'm saying it's easy to fake and you should have to have medical evidence to claim for it.

Not only did I visit my GP, but the bloke's insurance company made me go through two medical assessments by an independent doctor. I really don't think they just pay out for the sake of it.
