Implying the ripping off of taxpayers? Who, Francis? From the Telegraph:

Francis Maude, the shadow minister for the cabinet office, attempted to claim the mortgage interest on his family home in Sussex. This arrangement was rejected by the Fees Office. Two years later, Mr Maude bought a flat in London a few minutes walk from a house he already owned. He then rented out the other property and began claiming on the new flat: the taxpayer has since covered nearly £35,000 in mortgage interest payments.

About time the pilgrims were stopped being paid to do union jobs by the taxpayer.
reasonable time off from normal work duties to perform union type duties on behalf of the workforce does not and should never equate to a full time position paid for by the council/civil service.

You do union work, then the union should pay for it.

I'll just put this here for balance:

Quote:
As union reps, we don't spend all day plotting revolution at your expense
Forget the constant smears, civil service union reps make a real difference to people's lives and save the taxpayer money

...But what's missing from this picture? There's a lot about the costs, but nothing about the benefits. Nothing about the fact that the TUC has shown, using government figures, that for every pound spent on facility time in the public sector, our economy gets between £3 and £9 back. Not a bad return on the investment.

This is because, among other things, reps like me prevent small grievances becoming bigger ones that end up in costly tribunals; we make workplaces healthier and safer, so preventing more injuries; and we assist with training for staff...

As a working rule of thumb, any proposal backed by the Tax Payers Alliance (let alone one inspired by such cretins) is worthy of instant rejection.
However, any calculation of ROI that says £1 invested returns between £3 and £9 is clearly the work of a similarly inept moron.
So I find myself trapped in a paradox where the idea is clearly stupid, but rejecting it is also stupid.

The obvious solution is that paid union reps should be retained, but they must be legally obliged to go permanently on strike.

if you are 'entitled' to representation at work for any inquiries by your employer then they pay the cost of such representation on your behalf for independent representation ...

Must be some really dangerous offices that require a full time person to be paid for representation purposes!

Depends how you define 'dangerous' I suppose. There are some places right now where I suspect the Union respresentatives are really busy. Like various parts of the NHS for example, where the DoH/trusts are about to unilaterally change the contracts of large numbers of staff to mean they get paid less for the same work. If/when that's done to me, I might want to have a word with my union rep as well.

i have above and beyond my union membership an employment insurance policy for all legal costs for me and my family for employment disputes

which means if required, i can afford to take the bastards to court ...
