I was very pleased to hear that when it came on the radio. At least someone in the judiciary has a working brain cell, sense of humour and proportion. |

Well, there are parallels but IMO in his case (having seen the tweets in question) I don't think they were meant as a joke. Certainly they were a threat, whether they were a threat that would ever come to anything is another question. I don't think the police can take the risk of them being empty threats. In this case I have no issue with the police getting involved. Even if it comes to nothing, which is very possible, if the idea of a visit from the plod is enough to dissuade a few other loud mouthed idiots from abusing people on social networks I think overall it'll have done some good for society. It's all very well saying 'just ignore him/them', but if one of them gets slapped down occasionally that can't be a bad thing. |

Am I right in thinking (not being a twitter user) that all twitter posts are public (ie anyone can see and follow your posts)? If so then any threat made is made in public, rather than a private joke between friends. I can see how that would be taken seriously, at least to start with. |

With my mod hat on, can I just remind everyone to be careful about commenting on this case too deeply, as it is now a legal case before the courts. That said, if anyone threatens death or injury by any means, it's breaking the law. This is why the police have taken action. Whether things proceed further remains to be seen. A Twitter stream is public, and as a Twitter user I am always careful about what I say. Then again, I'm supposed to be older and wiser than many who use the service. |
