I was reading up on that a while back - I love the concept of the "Sky crane" for the lander. |

The entire landing sequence is, well, insane on the level of a Gerry Anderson production. It uses 4 different, and quite distinct, devices to get the lander down safely. Here’s a cinematograph of the landing where “boffins” explain it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki_Af_o9Q9s ![]() ![]() |

+9000 I was watching the NASA channel live as it happened. The exuberance and fist pumping was OTT, but I really enjoyed the suspence and anticipation. I would have loved to experience the first moon landing like my parents. |

I've got this image of a UK based agency managing the same feat, having a polite round of applause, a 'Well done' to the head boffin and then back to your desks please, there's work to be done. |

I'm sure that's how it would happen if the UK had a space agency worth anything. |

as a boy i watched the moon landings i can not think of anything greater up to to and including the '66 world cup which i watched 'live' in black and white i have seen/watched man walk on the moon i do hope that in my life time i see man walk on mars this i would consider a privilege in my life time one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind to boldly go where no one has gone before ... |

My dad and his family didn't have a TV so they went to watch the landing at their neighbours. I always love listening to the story about that. ![]() Apparently we could send man to Mars for £13 billion. Now that's not much more than the Olympics. Of course most of the seats on the spacecraft would be empty. ![]() |

I think it would be good to have a Three Strike Cry Wolf condition on media of this type. Something that would counter YouTubes guilty until proven innocent aspect of uploads when challenged by this parasitic sort of company. ![]() |

Curiosity, during descent Taking a photo of that landing from another craft in orbit around Mars is just as staggeringly awesome as the landing itself. Mark |
