It's going to sound uncaring, but I'm glad he did it in a way that wouldn't scar somebody else for life (eg Jumping in front of a train).

Indeed. Hell of a decision to make, and one which I guess was taken pragmatically. He's clearly saved himself a far worse ending, and his family the pain of watching him die slowly and no doubt in a lot of pain. I feel sorry that he had to end his life in such a "messy" way, whilst at the same time, in the same state, vets will be giving animals a far cleaner and humane exit.
