Well, from what I've read, the father and son who were murdered were no angels themselves - both were involved in serious crime and had recently served time.

It's the police I feel for, it's days like these that you realise what a truly hard job it is and that at any moment they could pay the ultimate price for doing their job.

What are the odds the Daily Mail leader tomorrow is going to be screaming for all police to be armed...

It has been happening all day. The TV news is all about should the police be armed?

No, if nothing else the average Met. officer would get a gun

Then more civilians getting killed. If these two officers were armed they could both still be dead and he would have two more guns and more ammo. The police said that if they knew that this address was linked to him it would have been dealt with by an armed response team. Which is appropriate.

From what I've read in various news reports these officers were taken by surprise so I'm not sure being armed would have helped anyone.

...or the death penalty, no doubt. Which, I'm sure, would have made this chap stop and decide not to murder two police officers.

I did hear, on this morning's radio, there was originally a promise from the judiciary that cop-killers would serve a full life term; when the death penalty was removed. The understanding being that those willing to kill police officers should receive harsher punishments.

I can understand the extension of punishment for killing on duty police but what about on duty firemen ambulance nurses etc? Though I do think that the corollary should be double sentences for those on duty committing offences against the public.
