Are Apple posturing to buy Samsung? They could dismantle the phone business, and have immediate access to the TVs, obviously the whole screen panel market, RAM, etc. etc.. They could in effect buy themselves a whole manufacturing division, consumer R&D, shut out the competition and become an entire ecosystem.

Interesting idea. Swallowing something like that would not be easy though.

They could keep them separate though.

It would never happen due to cost, regulators and politics

Not likely. The whole chaebol system works on its cross linkages so it makes it very expensive for outsiders to take over.

Indeed. Samsung are one of the few companies that can stand toe-to-toe with Apple, financially. And even if they could afford it (which they can't) the local authorities would never let it happen.

The increased claim for damages are probably more of a warning shot to other phone manufacturers. That said hopefully we can see far more innovation in phone design. I was never a fan of clamshell designs but some were. Now we might see them again.
