http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-19646731Nick's finally feeling the fear. And he's clearly not alone.

Agreed. I don't think any of them have a leg to stand on about breaking election promises.
However, if Clegg thinks just saying sorry is going to get him out of this one he's even more naive than he's previously appeared to be.

Unless the Libs go on an all out offensive to publicly wreck the coalition they will get slaughtered in the next general election and even if they did do that they would still get slaughtered in the next General election. All these years the Lib dems have dreamt of having power. When they had the oppitunity they took it but found it to be a poisoned chalice.

This is a political apology. He’s not apologising for doing wrong in the way that you think - ie letting tuition fees go up.
No, he’s apologising for getting involved with that whole pledge thing at the start. He’s sorry he signed it, not sorry for being involved with hiking fees. The problem for him, though, is that’s not going to be enough.

I agree. The only reason that they are doing this now is because voters will not listen to them. So they are going to lose a lot of seats next election.

This is what happens when you expect never to be in power. You can say what you like without having to care if it's affordable. That promise has come back to haunt them.
Though they could easily point out that that issue was one of the compramises made to form the government. Just like teh Tories have had to cut back some of their plans.

I can't remember where I read it, I think it was a columnist from the Guardian who put it quite appropriately. Clegg is apologising like a cheating husband but isn't promising that he won't do it again.
Basically he's apologising for being the usual sort of UK MP. Points for the guilt but no points for acting like the person you profess you don't want to be.

I can't believe he didn't play the 'Sorry, the Tories made us do it' line.

So I guess that Clegg will be getting songwriters royalties, and a possible invite to the Brit music awards?
