A teacher has said he is angry about being fined £150 for throwing an apple core out of his car into a hedge.

Cyril Falls, 53, who is a teacher at Bangor Academy, County Down, said he thought it was OK to throw the apple core because it is biodegradable.

Exactly how is this a crime?

I used to throw apple cores away like that when walking in Derbyshire. Like the man said, it's biodegradable.

Exactly and not even an invasive species either. I can only assume that they treat it all as non biodegradable to avoid confusion.

I wonder where they stand on throwing bread to the birds?

Birds need more than bread. Try mealworms instead.

My thought was they probably don't want trees growing on the grass verges of motorways & dual carriageways. One more thing for people to crash into.

Are seeds from apples viable? I'm not too sure that they are given that all apples are a heady mix of cuttings from hybrids grafted on to root stock from a different species.

It kind of doesn't matter, it just matters if they think they're viable.

Round here when they dig a new road out they plant loads of trees on the scar, so it can't be that.

In maybe thirty years time and even then they have to survive the verge mowing.

Do they have to fine trees for each time they drop an apple or chestnut?

There is an argument for not encouraging wild life to expect to forage on dropped food from humans.

The squirrels are in enough trouble for littering chestnuts already.
