Depending on price, I could actually be tempted as my first foray into iOS.

I find my tablet a little heavy, but at the time I bought it there was nothing smaller with the same resolution and I really like my pixels. I'm assuming this is going to have a very good resolution for the size. If it's real of course!

On the pixel note...

Rather, an analyst told Cnet, the so-called Nexus 10 will be a "high end device" with a 2560x1600 display with a 299 ppi pixel density – that's a higher resolution than the Retina display iPad.

I want another tablet so I can leave the current one in work :D , but an upgrade would be nice so long as it has a full-size USB port (use mine all the time, I've got enough bloody wires in my life).

*Shakes head* Apple are apparently about to announce they are going to start selling a new product which will (almost inevitably) sell in massive numbers and make their enormous mountain of cash even larger, and yet the share price is falling.

Is there anyone left who isn't convinced the people who frequent the stock market are in fact a bunch of utter chuckleheads?

I am not so sure that this is happening. I will believe it when I see it.

It would be interesting to see if the screen resolution is 1024x768 but at a "retina display" dot pitch if one is released. That would make it easy for devs - no need to do yet another selection of images for another screen size.

That's what I'm hoping for. Same res as my HP, but a more comfortable size and weight to use.

Of course the cost is the clincher for me. I'm hoping it will be significantly cheaper than the similar spec big brother.

If those massive numbers (which I agree it would sell) are people buying the smaller and cheaper version instead of the bigger higher profit brother then Apple are canabalising their own sales (which is far better than other people taking the sales off you) and would see a lower profit returned than would be otherwise.

when its released im hoping they will have the finger sharpening tool required to use a smaller version ready to launch as well

That's is too small for a tablet, and for most people that already have a phone it's kinda pointless duplicating the functionality on a near-identical device.

I don't need one because I already have a phone and a tablet... but I do want one!

I actually like my full size iPad and doubt that a device between the iPad and iPhone will interest me. It might appeal to those that do not have a tablet yet. I think that if the price is low then it will decimate the Android tablet market.

I think there will possibly be some cannibalization, yes. However, I also think there are a number of people who would like to buy an iPad but find the current one too large or too expensive. Not all of those people have gone out and bought a Kindle Fire or Nexus 7 instead already, especially the ones who are existing iOS users. Whether there's enough of those people left - who are effectively 'new money' to Apple - to offset the losses due to cannibalisation is an interesting question, which at this point can only be answered by conjecture. We'll have to wait and see.

However, it doesn't change the fact that the stock market operates on rules entirely of it's own, which only rarely connect to the real world. In the real world, Apple will continue making money hand over fist for at least a few years yet. I think it's somewhat unlikely the share price has actually peaked.

It's unlikely to match the Fire or Nexus 7 price wise. Both of those are selling effectively at cost being subsidised by sales of digital content (in Amazon's case) or advertising (in Google's case). Apple don't have anything to subsidise the price with in the same way. They probably could actually afford to sell it at not much above cost as a way to build market share in the smaller tablet segment, but that's not the way Apple tend to do things.

IMO, if there is such a thing as an iPad mini, it'll probably cost somewhere between £199 and £249, depending on how bullish Apple are feeling.

If the price is between £199 and £249, it will take a large slice of the market. There are many who would like an iPad but cannot afford it. The cannibalisation will be significant of iPod Touches. It will have a bigger screen and not be that much more. Rumours are that it will be wifi only and non retina screened to keep the price down.

I doubt that Apple will sell it at a loss. They have the best buying power in the sector so could make significant purchases at volumes that no one else can match.
