Quote:
Toyota is voluntarily recalling more than seven million vehicles worldwide, including some Yaris, Corolla and Camry models, over faulty window switches.

It affects 1.39 million cars in Europe - 138,000 in the UK - 2.47 million in the US and 1.4 million in China.

It is the biggest single recall since Ford called back eight million vehicles in 1996.

Interesting. An electric window switch doesn't really seem to justify a recall. You'd assume 'a free fix at next service' would be fine. You generally only issue recalls if the fault is somehow dangerous. Toyota say not..

Toyota said there had been no reports of accidents, injuries or deaths as a result of the window problem.

Apparently, in some cases the switch has overheated and melted, posing a fire risk.

Have you read which vehicles are affected?

certain models...produced between 2005 and 2010.

A lot of the vehicles will be outside the dealer/manufacturer warranty range. Only those after 2009 would be serviced at a dealership. The rest are unlikely to be serviced at a dealer and are more likely to be MOTed at independent garages.

Do you have any statistics to back that up?

Doesn't matter. I can easily ask you to prove to me that all of those potentially affected cars are always serviced at the dealer. The risk is high enough that Toyota have asked for a recall.

How many people take their car to a main dealer for a standard service? Especially given the labour prices they charge?

^^^ This alone shows that not everyone goes to the main dealer to get their car serviced or repaired. Why should they pay prices that are sometimes overinflated for a service?

Thankfully my Corolla is two years too old to be affected.
