Sky's price hike gives customers chance to ditch contract, says Ofcom

http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2012/oc ... h-contract

Quote:
Sky is to hammer customers with a second price increase in three months, raising the cost of telephone line rental by 18% from £12.25 to £14.50 a month from December. The rise is so large that the telecommunications regulator Ofcom has said customers should be able to walk away from their contracts without penalty.

The latest price hike announcement comes a month after the firm's September increase in daytime call fees from 7.6p a minute to 7.95p, and a rise in call-connection charges from 12.5p to 13.1p.

The rise is enough for customers to tear up their contracts and choose an alternative provider: Ofcom rules state that if a provider makes a change to a customer's contract of "material detriment", they should be free to switch without penalty. Sky has confirmed it will allow customers to do so. Its website states: "If you are a Sky Talk Line Rental customer affected by the change above, you have the option to cancel your Sky Talk subscription without charge."

How many forum members does this affect?

Possibly me, but I'm not sure as my exchange is not unbundled so it's all bt anyway. I haven't had a letter to my knowledge. I'm not on contract anyway though.

This really applies to those with Sky Talk packages including Line Rental. I was considering the package when I am free to switch next year, but with all the extra costs I think that it might not be worth it. My current line package is a very low user package and with my iPhone contract I have no need for a extended package that I would get with Sky.

The other thing that was problematic is that Sky cannot guarantee transfer of phone numbers. Though with the low user package that I have now the benefits of a combined bill with big discounts for broadband and are simply not there for me.

I only have a landline for the broadband. With all the minutes I have on my mobile, the only thing my landline gets used for is to record robotised ppi messages on my 151. Last time I looked there were 34 messages on there!

What really annoys me is that Sky advertise their TV, Phone and Broadband for £21.50 per month (yet you have also to add Line Rental which can be anything depending on provider and deal) So the package is not £21.50 it is a lot more than that.

Unfortunately Sky aren't the only ones who do that, it's common practice - BT, Virgin, and Talk Talk are all at it as well.

I'm currently switching from BT to Zen Internet for my phone line as it's only £11.22 pcm. No inclusive minutes but I usually only use the phone once a week to call the parents.
No call connection charge and per second billing sounded like a good deal to me and I keep my BT number as well.

I get a cheap package (line rental, calls and broadband) from Plusnet. Paying a year's line rental up front saves even more.
