In Sweden where fathers have had such rights for years and in fact their rights extend till they are eighteen. Yet most men do not take it. In fact both parents get rights to go to school with their kids but few take it up.

good companies will pay the full pay of the father, most will only pay statutory pay thus negating the usefulness of this proposal.

Like houseold incomes could tolerate twelve months of paternity pay. Just two weeks is going to cripple us this month.

And losing the female income is any better?

Generally speaking, just before and after giving birth I think the mother probably needs the time off work more than the father! Later on, at least there's a choice now.

I have one friend where the husband earns a lot less than his wife and so does the child care, but he was self employed anyway so this doesn't really help. Plus he doesn't work in the UK so it's irrelevant too.

I'm quite sure the law doesnt offer that the father give birth to the child so of course the woman has to have some time off.
However during the first year of the baby, I don't see why the father couldn't take time off to care for the baby. Households that can't afford to lose 12 months of paternity pay, probably can't afford 12th months of maternity leave either.

Households that can't afford to probably shouldn't be having children.

It shouldn't be in theory, but statistically men still get paid more than women, dispite laws to stop that.
