What? None of the rabid right-wing xenophobic papers not carrying this? I'm sure I saw it on the front page of The Sun or Mail in the news agents today.
Or maybe it's a non-story. The rule runs both ways - EU countries have to treat a Uk citizen if they need it. With the right paperwork, the NHS will pick up the tab too.

I read that article and three things struck me: - £40 million of free treatment is 0.00038% of the annual NHS budget.
- GPs and PCTs should grow a pair. I doubt the DWP shakes in its boots every time it receives a threat from a solicitor.
- The Department of Health should tighten guidance in order to reduce the threat of legal action.

And that £40 million was accrued over three years.

If it is a problem it could easily be solved by not letting visitors past the immigration desk unless they have proof of medical insurance. When I went to the US, they wanted proof that I had a return flight out of the country booked.
