Supermarkets 'to be banned from discounting multiple wine bottles'

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politic ... ttles.html

Quote:
Most supermarkets offer significant discounts for customers buying bottles of wine by the dozen or half-dozen. Sainsbury’s and Waitrose, for example, regularly offer a 25 per cent discount for six bottles of wine.
Ministers believe such promotions give customers a financial incentive to purchase more alcohol than they intended to buy and should be banned.
The plans, being driven by David Cameron, have raised fears that middle-class households will bear the brunt of measures supposedly aimed at troublemaking youths and other anti-social drinkers.
The measures will include a new minimum price for alcohol as ministers try to reduce what they say is irresponsible drinking.
They say new curbs on sales are required because of the growing problems of crime and illness caused by alcohol consumption. The most recent figures show the NHS treats more than 1.1 million people every year as a result of the effects of alcohol.

It couldn't possibly be that people keep the extra wine and drink it over a long period of time rather than binge drink it.....

Exactly. People might bulk buy for a party or wedding as well.

It's a con anyway, the "discounted" bottles are usually available cheaper at full price at your local off licence.

Isn't the "minimum price" for alcohol already in effect in Scotland? Presumably the government now has proof that it has reduced alcohol related crime, since if the statistics are inconclusive it'll just look like another form of taxation and an inefficient one at that.

Yeah, that was my first thought. I used to be in a wine club and we'd buy the wine wholesale and I'd regularly buy a case of good wine, but I'd still only drink 2 or 3 bottles in a month...

I know my dad ONLY buys wine when it's on offer like that, then he stores it in the garage.

The offers are often on really good wine. I tend to buy the half-price rather than the multi-buys though, partly due to storage issues but also because they tend to be better discounts.

You do have to check though, because often the "half price" wine was cheaper a few months earlier. It helps if you know what you like already, but that's not entirely possible if you want to try something new.

I'd have been better pointing out that if it's wine they'll drink it
