Itsa re-issue to ensure that some of the gloss of Googles launch is dulle, just a wee bit.

I don't think it's worked.

Effectively, Microsoft have become the first company to say they are going to be making apps for the chrome platform.

Office is an essential piece of software to a lot of people. It's often a deal maker, or deal breaker. Having MS Office on chrome is a right win for Google.

Indeed, I'm still in two minds whether to ruin my Mac with MS Office or not. :)

Yeah, don't think they thought that one though did they!

As an aside, I wonder what format the web version of Word will follow - familar 2003 style or controversial 2007 style?
Openoffice on the mac seems quite good, so I think I'll stick with that.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is 2003 style (or even below) just to differentiate it from 2007 and any sales that might get ;)

Office 2010 will include lightweight versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote when it ships next year.

I'm confused... Does this mean that you will have to purchase Office 2010 to get the lightweight versions, or will they be free Web-apps?

I must admit when I read it it translated to you "will have to purchase Office 2010 to get the lightweight versions".

You can access them through Windows Live for free, without purchase.

There is a PC Pro blog post about it here: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2009/07/14 ... s-dilemma/

Are you sure you got this right? Where does MS say they are gonna make apps for chrome?
MS web based office is just that, web based Office and you can use any platform you want to use it.

Though Microsoft will look at it as part of their Cloud plans. Though they needed something to stop the threat from Google Docs.

They don't announce it as such, but we know from Google's announcement that their OS is a slimmed-down linux kernel with the chrome browser sat ontop, and that any web-based apps will work on the platform.

So by announcing (or re-announcing) the release of a web-based version of Office, they're making it available on Chrome.
