er me choosing to keep the default No track is me expressing my user intent.
Well that has just ensured that I wont be going anywhere near Yahoo owned sites (except flickr) except by accident.

+1. Microsoft are far too often maligned. This is clearly something that is good for the majority of users. I have no objection to any company tracking what I look at on their site. I do not approve of them tracking where else I go.

Yes but this is do not track as default. Not as an option that many will not even realise is there.

I didn't let Windows 8 set the default, I selected manual install, so they better darn well not track me when I visit!

This is the problem, though. We saw this with Microsoft’s attempts to harden Windows against viruses to the point where you had to really, really try to get them to run. It was an excellent idea, and would have made viruses far less of a problem (was this Vista? I can]t remember which version). The problem was that the anti-virus market leaders complained and griped, and Microsoft were forced to stop this. As well as killing viruses, Microsoft would have killed an entire market.

Same issue here and I suspect that there will be some back-tracking from the folk at Redmond.

The problem is that a lot of site bury widgets and buttons in their pages using iFrames - Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn all do it. And if you visit a site with an embedded Flickr gallery, you’ll likely be seeing similar happen too.

I hope not. While it might cause problems for ad companies they need to appreciate that as we pay for our access we do not want screens filled with ads unless we go to a site with them. Microsoft are on the right track. It is the others who have an alternative agenda who are wrong.

I remember the big hoo-haa with MS and the antivirus companies. They wanted to lock down the kernel but meant that AV software wouldn't work accurately. It really peeved me off (though it could have been interpreted as MS wanting control over their software).

I haven't used yahoo for a long time. I think the last time was maybe 2004-5. I used to use it for Yahoo Chat and Yahoo Pool when I was bored. Also had an email address with them (the primary being hotmail). Once I'd discovered Google circa 2003-4, I didn't use any other search engine. Over time, I stopped using the Yahoo stuff. They mean nothing to me now except a nuisance toolbar that wants to be installed with some of the software I use.

The only thing I use Yahoo for is Flickr. They should spend time on updating that site instead of ignoring privacy settings.
