Nice to see the judge spotted what Apple had done and told them to do it properly or else.

I think we all knew this was going to happen. Let this be a short, sharp lesson to whichever department at Apple decided this was a fundamentally good idea.

It's nice for Apple to be reminded that they don't rule the world.

He claimed that it would take Apple 14 days to take down and change the notice, but this request was, unsurprisingly, rejected by the court.
"I would like to see the head of Apple make an affidavit setting out the technical difficulties which means Apple can't put this on," the judge said.
"I just can't believe the instructions you've been given. This is Apple. They cannot put something on their website?"

Given that they can't even change a product on their online store without taking the whole thing offline, I can well believe it.

I expect it would be a quick job for the web team, but there are several weeks of assessment and bureaucratic nonsense behind all of their web pages.

it seems Apple have found the ability to update its web site quicker than it stated.

clicky
This time with no obfuscation or implying that it is an incorrect decision.

I still don't see an apology. Just statements derived from the case.

The statement is exactly what the judge told them to say. If you think they're going to go one iota further than that, you're being naive. The one thing that recent events has proved beyond reasonable doubt is Apple don't think they did anything wrong, regardless of what the judge said.

I don't recall Apple were ever asked to apologise, it was purely a statement to say that Samsung did not, in the UK court's opinion, infringe Apple's copyright and patents. And they've done that now.

I do think their first attempt was pushing their luck though! I suspect that was more due to their lawyers' advice, but even so they were rather cheeky.

I suspect a lot of people were expecting them to make an apology and print the advert in their usual style and format. I wonder if that is what to judge had in kind too.

Anyway, looking at their UK home page, they haven't put the statement there, but a small link to it. Again, I wonder if this is what the judge intended.

Not that they'll give a damn. Their attitude to this comes across as "we've got money to burn, screw you!".

Samsung's legal fees are likely to have been quite substantial but in the grand scheme of the profits those two make, it's a drop in the bucket really. Companies of the scale of Apple and Samsung are essentially immune to the law unless the authorities go after specific executives (see Enron etc). Even banning one (or other) of them from selling certain products in an entire country is only likely to bother them slightly.

This is what makes the legal tomfoolery even more futile. Even if one or other of them wins one of these cases, the effect of losing or winning is marginal at best.

They'll either realise that it's a war of attrition neither can win, or one will end up buying out a segment of the other.

Until then, it's a destructive process that shows that tech industries aren't innovating.
