Humbling

The poorest President

Quote:
This austere lifestyle - and the fact that Mujica donates about 90% of his monthly salary, equivalent to $12,000 (£7,500), to charity - has led him to be labelled the poorest president in the world.

"I've lived like this most of my life," he says, sitting on an old chair in his garden, using a cushion favoured by Manuela the dog.

"I can live well with what I have."

His charitable donations - which benefit poor people and small entrepreneurs - mean his salary is roughly in line with the average Uruguayan income of $775 (£485) a month.

And we have politicians scamming tens of thousands of pounds and not being held accountable for it as they are not 'mentally' able to attend court

Or maybe he truly is the richest as he feels he has everything he'll ever need.

I think the better description is the worlds most honest politician. If he does not need the money he does not claim it. It also makes him incorruptible if his pay is too much, then what scope for some multinational trying to bribe him? None.

Good for him. It's nice to see a politician that's not corrupt as [LIFTED].

Politicians salaries should be a fixed multiplier of the average (or median) wage

Quote:
April 2010 median gross weekly earnings for full-time employees were £499

That way if the economy is doing well then they do better and if not then they take home less

Or a fixed multiple of the minimum wage, so if they cut it they cut their own wages. Why not cap MP's housing costs to the same as housing benefit. It is obviously good for society in that it will attract only those that will be in it for the right reasons. Unfortunately they link their wages to some sector like FTSE directors whose pay climbs like a rocket.
