I'm getting really hacked off with his lawyer though over the tweets, basically it's 'admit it and we'll come to a settlement.' Which is all very dubious ![]() |

He must be using a no win no fee lawyer. That said he does deserve the payout though was he really named by the BBC? It might have been a tweeter trend but the BBC end up paying out. The Newsnight team look like losing a few journalists for incompetence. |

Sounds like his lawyer used to work for the recording industry. |

He'd look a lot better if he just dropped it. He's been exonerated. Going after the bbc who didn't actually name home is not a good look. I'm annoyed they've paid out and annoyed he's accepted the money. A man of his means should be after apologies and the higher moral ground, not cash. |

If I was in his position I'd be going all out to crucify anyone who made or propagated the allegations. Especially those in power or influence, allegations such as peadophillia will remain no matter if it's found to be false. In his case he is lucky he has the money to pay for a good solicitor others who get falsely accused do not. |

He has not been completely exonerated. The man who made the original claim said the man that abused him was not Lord McAlpine. The fact that someone was able to claim to be him and has not been stopped should be of concern. The police who failed to investigate this years ago have left mud on Lord McAlpines name. What about Freddie Starr and DLT? They now have been tarnished as potential paedophiles but on what evidence? The police should stop naming people. |

The police - overtly at least - don't name people. They always use descriptive language like ' a man in his 60's from Derbyshire'. They do not and will not confirm an interviewees identity even if asked in a press conference. The problem (my suspicion) is that there is widespread collusion between some members of the police and the press to leak the identity if it's a noteworthy interviewee or case. I wouldn't use the word 'corruption' but you would have to ask if the police are leaking these details (and there's nobody else who has them to leak...) why are they doing it? Jon |

You may be right in that corrupt officers are leaking details to the press. Yes another inquiry? ![]() |

But the impact on regular tweeters could be catastrophic financially. |

![]() ![]() Small prize to whoever can come up with the most amusing definition of what 'to kerch' is. While not getting sued by Lord McAlpine, obviously. Jon |
