Quote:
The MPs, including former Cabinet ministers, are claiming expenses of up to £20,000 a year each for rent, as well as receiving money from properties that were often bought and refurbished with taxpayer assistance.
Last month it was disclosed that 27 MPs were letting out their second homes while charging the taxpayer for renting another property.
Tonight’s Channel 4’s Dispatches programme found five more — three MPs who were carrying out the practice in London and another two who were renting and letting properties in their constituencies.
The MPs now found to be renting out homes in London are: John Whittingdale, the Conservative chairman of the culture, media and sport committee, the Tory MP Mark Pritchard and John Denham, a former Labour cabinet minister.
Labour’s Michael Meacher was also found by Dispatches to have moved out of his home in Oldham to rent a new property, while Pat McFadden, a Labour former minister, did the same in Wolverhampton.
The rules of the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) state that “members of Parliament must not exploit the system for personal financial advantage”.
The MPs insist they have done nothing wrong, and were forced to act by new Ipsa rules banning claims for mortgage interest payments from the end of August.
The full details will be disclosed by the authority today when it publishes names of the landlords of more than 300 MPs, defying the wishes of John Bercow, the Speaker.

How many should be in gaol for this?

New simple rule.
If your seat is inside the M25, you don't get any allowances for rent etc as you should be expected to cummute in from your own home.

And to do so you get an oyster card with enough on it for two trips a day five days a week.

They get caught with their fingers in the till the first time round, and resolve the issue by scamming the country in a different way.

Wouldn't it be cheaper for the government to buy a block of flats for MP housing, and outlaw the letting/selling of the family home?

Makes an easy target for terrorists but that is another reason why we should do it. End the grace and favour flats like those in Downing Street and that way ministers can always be contacted by MP's at all times, as they will be all on the same site.

As for constituency homes ban any candidate who does not live in the constituency, prior to the election. That stops parties parachuting in candidates.

I'd certainly support the idea of an MP's block of flats. It's not like the government doesn't have enough London real estate to play with.
It would make an easier target for terrorists but at the same time it would also make it easier to provide security for the place.

This was the subject of Channel 4's Dispatches last night. I especially liked the MP who moved out of his tax payer mortgage funded house into rented accommodation and then rented out his house to another MP thereby enabling 2 MP's to claim their rent from the tax payer and all within the new rules.

What a return to Transportation? Well we did it with our criminals a couple of hundred years ago. I think that the current residents might complain.
