Columbia also has problems with right wing parties involved in drugs. Yet pretty much like the IRA hiding their weapons and effectively putting them out of easy reach might be a start. Northern Ireland might be a model for a solution. Also a marxist party might be more willing to co-operate with a centre left president, than a right wing leader.

The difference was even the IRA would struggle to rearm quick enough if the security forces were on the ball; FARC would only have to use their smuggling routes and start a bombing campaign in the meantime (guess who showed them how to make fuel-air bombs).
